What happens when artists and citizens collaborate together to tell the story of a place? This is what we have experienced in Corte Ospitale with BLOOM 2023 – La riserva del teatro, a project that engaged 15 artists and 30 citizens to tell the story of the Riserva Naturale Cassa di Espansione del Fiume Secchia, just north of the Via Emilia between the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia, a wetland area of 260 hectares in size.

Citizens, divided into thematic groups, co-designed together for 30 days to collect materials, stories and testimonies about the Nature Reserve, divided into 4 working groups:

HISTORY OF THE RESERVE AND THE PLACE that worked on past history from prehistory to the present, through the Etruscan era, the floods of the last century, and the construction of the Expansion Tanks.
COMMUNITY i.e., the human beings who have frequented and frequent the Reserve: stories of hyppie gatherings, of life and death on the river, of children’s games, and fishermen.
NATURE a group that went through two strands: the migratory fluxes of the birds that inhabit the Reserve and the perception of the sacred in relation to the river and the natural element.
CORTE OSPITALE to tell how the structure, an ancient hospice for pilgrims built in the 16th century, came into being, how it has been transformed over time to become a theatrical residence center, and what is its relationship with the Secchia River.

Giuliana Musso and 15 newly graduated young artists then transformed all this material into artistic matter in a 30-day residency, resulting in a final event held in Corte Ospitale on September 30 and October 1, 2023.

Mooncult facilitated the first part of co-design and collection of materials with citizens.
